And last up is actually an interview not done at ACL Fest. The Milk Carton Kids were in town a couple of weeks before and I talked to them before their show at Lambert’s. I was super excited to talk to them. Their new album, Prologue, is fantastic and free at their website. Anyways, take a listen and let me know what you think of the show!

SANCT is the Latin root for holy or official. And it’s official, Bavu is back! I was extremely happy to hear some really creative stuff going on in this EP. I would have to bet that creativity is something that wouldn’t have happened if he still lived in Texas. I think the change has helped in his creative process. There’s something magical about being out of a comfort zone.

In typical Blakes form, every lyric is finally crafted, tweaked and put on its ear. The honesty of self in this EP is amazing. This album isn’t about the hip hop fluff; the girls, guns and grills. He doesn’t pull any punches about the game or about himself. It’s an extremely personal piece of work.

Take all of that honesty and add the feel of a live band; I’m talkin’ old school Roots, a touch of Beatnuts with some dirty/crunchy drums. It’s organic and I hate using that word! It doesn’t sound like a production, a sound booth or a board. There’s nothing sterile in the sound. It is definitely closer to the sound of a Bavu Blakes live show and I always felt that was missing between the produced albums and his live show.

FineGreat is my favorite track, but most are pointing towards Eddie Long as being the true single of SANCT. Either way, you can’t go wrong listening and learning about who Bavu Blakes is and what growth and evolution of self are all about. In the track “Don’t Turn Me Down”, Bavu asks “How do I say hi after my hiatus?” He figured out how. Hiatus over!
